PROCESS
Working with artists and crews on film and stage in narrative, commercial, documentary, branded, theatre, experiential and experimental, Derrick has directed hundreds of pieces from conception to realization.
He has lit each of the film, video and theatre pieces that he has directed over the years with many different standard, custom-made/programmed, sound-reactive, large and small scale systems, all conceived in the design process.
He has shot all of the pieces made in the last 20 years in an attempt to remove the impersonal impediments of traditional large crews and reduce the separation between himself and the subjects.
As a writer, he has conceived and written large-scale theatre, retrospective texts, endless treatments, scripts for narrative and visual art projects, immersive events, poetic experimental film and many other forms.
As an editor, he has cut each of the pieces he has directed and shot for years, and is often called upon to work as a senior contributor on commercial, narrative and documentary projects for many different organizations.
Beyond this, he is a collaborator at the heart of his practice... working with artists to adapt stageworks into film, musicians to realize visual accompaniment to their songs and various other disciplines to translate their worlds into moving images.
